Okmok Volcano
random image
View to the northeast, Gates at very top. In this image you can see 4 of the 5 prominent lakes currently present inside Okmok. Tan muddy Cone G lake at lower left is dammed by the 1997 flow (dotted itself with numerous small ponds)and a prehistoric tuff cone limb. It is actively draining, however, into the turquoise 'new' lake at lower right as we saw a vigorous discharge from the base of the lava cliff at the west end of the new lake. We took GPS elevations of each lake to see how they evolve over the winter - we suspect it will look very different next year. Even during our week there, the shallower lakes appeared to fill during the rainy days.

ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
Friday, November 20, 2009 12:00 PM (Friday, November 20, 2009 21:00 UTC)

No eruptive activity has been detected at volcanoes in Alaska this week. Because there are no volcanoes at elevated color codes or alert levels, AVO has suspended its daily reporting procedures and is not issuing its usual daily status reports.

MONITORED ALASKAN VOLCANOES

Seismic activity is monitored in real time at 27 volcanoes in Alaska. Satellite images of all Alaskan volcanoes are analyzed daily for evidence of ash plumes and elevated surface temperatures. Some volcanoes may currently display anomalous behavior but are not considered to be at a dangerous level of unrest. Akutan, Augustine, Dutton, Fisher, Gareloi, Great Sitkin, Griggs, Iliamna, Isanotski, Kanaga, Katmai, Mageik, Makushin, Martin, Novarupta, Okmok, Pavlof, Redoubt, Shishaldin, Snowy, Spurr, Tanaga, Trident, Ugashik-Peulik, Ukinrek Maars, Westdahl, and Wrangell volcanoes are in color code GREEN and volcano alert level Normal. All are at or near normal levels of background seismicity.

Please see http://www.avo.alaska.edu/color_codes.php for complete definitions of Aviation color codes and Volcano alert levels.
