| Jim has been involved with AVO since its founding in 1988, and also receives research support from the National Science Foundation, NASA, and the National Park system. He is a past president of the Commission on Tephrochronology and Volcanology of the International Quaternary Association (INQUA-COTAV), and is a current member of the Leader's Group of the Past Global Climate Change Program of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Project (IGBP-PAGES), researching Volcano-Climate Interactions and the U.S. National Quaternary Committee, sponsored by the National Research Council. His AVO research program emphasizes volcanic hazards, and includes tephra studes, reconstructions of volcano eruption histories, and volcanic tsunamis. His fieldwork has included projects at Augustine, Redoubt, Spurr, Iliamna, Douglass, Katmai, Shishaldin Makushin, Okmok, and other volcanoes in the eastern Aleutian arc, as well as volcanoes in Japan, Kamchatka, Iceland, Italy and other areas. |
