WSR-88D radar observations of volcanic ash 4273

The eruption of Augustine volcano during the period 11-28 January, 2006 presented a variety of challenges and opportunities for forecasters, scientists, and emergency managers throughout Southcentral Alaska. This event was the first time that a significant volcanic eruption was observed within the nominal range of a WSR-88D. The radar data, in conjunction with pilot reports, proved to be crucial in analyzing the height and movement of volcanic ash clouds during and immediately following each eruptive event. This data greatly aided National Weather Service meteorologists in the issuance of timely and accurate warning and advisory products to aviation, public, and marine interests.

The 1999 eruption of Shishaldin Volcano, Alaska: monitoring a distant eruption 2968

Shishaldin Volcano, in the central Aleutian volcanic arc, became seismically restless during the summer of 1998. Increasing unrest was monitored using a newly installed seismic network, weather satellites, and rare local visual observations. The unrest culminated in large eruptions on 19 April and 22-23 April 1999. The opening phase of the 19 April eruption produced a sub-Plinian column that rose to 16 km before rapidly dissipating. About 80 min into the 19 April event we infer that the eruption style transitioned to vigorous Strombolian fountaining. Exceptionally vigorous seismic tremor heralded the 23 April eruption, which produced a large thermal anomaly observable by satellite, but only a modest, 6-km-high plume.

"Mt. Cleveland is one of more than 40 active volcanoes in Alaska that is monitored by the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). It is located on the western half of Chuginadak, a remote and uninhabited island in the east central Aleutians that lies 1526 km southwest of Anchorage. The closest inhabited community, Nikolski, is 75 km to the east on Umnak Island (Figure 1)."

Observations of volcanic clouds in their first few days of atmospheric residence: the 1992 eruptions of Crater Peak, Mount Spurr Volcano, Alaska 50

"Satellite SO2 and ash measurements of Mount Spurr's three 1992 volcanic clouds are compared with ground-based observations to develop an understanding of the physical and chemical evolution of volcanic clouds. Each of the three eruptions with ratings of volcanic explosivity index three reached the lower stratosphere (14 km asl), but the clouds were mainly dispersed at the tropopause by moderate to strong (20-40 m/s) tropospheric winds. Three stages of cloud evolution were identified. First, heavy fallout of large (1500 mm) pyroclasts occurred close to the volcano (25 km from the vent) during and immediately after the eruptions, and the cloud resembled an advected gravity current."

"Since 1986, three volcanoes (Augustine Volcano, Redoubt Volcano, and Mount Spurr) have erupted in the Cook Inlet area of Alaska. Each of these eruptions has had a significant impact on commercial aviation at Anchorage. The National Weather Service has greatly improved its capability to measure and track ash clouds in order to better advise the aviation community about the location of hazardous ash clouds. Two significant improvements, which were made following the Redoubt activity in 1989-90, were the installation of a High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) Information Processing System (HIPS) workstation for rapid digital-image processing of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data from polar-orbiting weather satellites, and the leasing of a meteorological C-band radar."

"This paper attempts to advance satellite-based volcanic cloud sensing through analysis of AVHRR data collected during the Redoubt eruptions of 1989-90. In particular, it tests a volcanic-cloud-discrimination algorithm developed by Holasek and Rose (1991) for the 1986 eruption of Augustine Volcano. Redoubt and Augustine Volcanoes, located in the Cook Inlet area of Alaska (Kienle, this volume), both erupted during the winter and early spring and have similar chemical compositions."
