AVO Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation

(1) VOLCANO OBSERVATORY NOTICE FOR AVIATION (VONA)
(2) Issued:20080208/(0321Z)
(3) Volcano:Cleveland (CAVW# 1101-24-)
(4) Current Color Code:ORANGE
(5) Previous Color Code:YELLOW
(6) Source:Alaska Volcano Observatory
(7) Notice Number:2008/A2
(8) Volcano Location:N 52 deg 49 min W 169 deg 56 min
(9) Area:Aleutians Alaska
(10) Summit Elevation:5676 ft (1730 m)
(11) Volcanic Activity Summary:Two pilot reports have been received of an eruption at Cleveland volcano at approximately 0120 UTC (16:30 AST). The plume was reported to be at 20,000 ft. above sea level. AVO sees a diffuse ash cloud extending northwest from the volcano. Clouds prevent us seeing if the plume has detached from the volcano. A diffuse low-level plume was also seen earlier in satellite data and would be consistent with an increase in activity. Thus, AVO is raising the Aviation color code to Orange and the Alert Level to Watch.
(12) Volcanic cloud height:Pilot report of 20,000 ft. above sea level. A diffuse ash cloud is seen in satellite data extending northwest from the volcano, consistent with a height less than 20,000 ft. above sea level based on forecast winds.
(13) Other volcanic cloud information:NIL
(14) Remarks:AVO monitors Cleveland Volcano with satellite imagery as weather allows. The lack of a real-time seismic network at Cleveland means that AVO is unable to track local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest. Short-lived explosions of ash that could exceed 20,000 ft above sea level can occur without warning and may go undetected on satellite imagery. Please see http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/Cleveland.php for more information.

(16) Next Notice:A new VAN will be issued if conditions change significantly or alert levels are modified. While a VAN is in effect, regularly scheduled updates are posted at http://www.avo.alaska.edu
Volcano Alert Levels
NORMAL
Volcano is in typical background, noneruptive state or, after a change from a higher level, volcanic activity has ceased and volcano has returned to noneruptive background state.
ADVISORY
Volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background level or, after a change from a higher level, volcanic activity has decreased significantly but continues to be closely monitored for possible renewed increase.
WATCH
Volcano is exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption, timeframe uncertain, OR eruption is underway but poses limited hazards.
WARNING
Hazardous eruption is imminent, underway, or suspected.
UNASSIGNED
Aviation Color Codes
GREEN
Volcano is in typical background, noneruptive state or, after a change from a higher level, volcanic activity has ceased and volcano has returned to noneruptive background state.
YELLOW
Volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background level or, after a change from a higher level, volcanic activity has decreased significantly but continues to be closely monitored for possible renewed increase.
ORANGE
Volcano is exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption, timeframe uncertain, OR eruption is underway with no or minor volcanic-ash emissions [ash-plume height specified, if possible].
RED
Eruption is imminent with significant emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere likely OR eruption is underway or suspected with significant emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere [ash-plume height specified, if possible].
