BUILDING A VOLCANO SCIENCE KIT COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course has ended.
USGS Alaska Science Center, Alaska Volcano Observatory, Alaska Pacific University
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Participants will construct a volcano teaching kit for grades 6-11 to be housed at at least a half dozen agencies and clearinghouses throughout the state for check-out by teachers for classroom use. Participants will determine the contents and activities to be included in the kit and corrleate the materials to Alaska’s science standards (GLEs). Resources for the kit will come from local and online sources and agencies, and through development in this course. Participants will summarize additional resources (books, agencies, websites etc.) available for teachers and a guidebook for use of the materials to be included in the kit. Field trips to local sites will be part of the learning experience.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Develop a teacher-made, sustainable, volcano teaching kit that is valuable to classroom teachers. This kit will be focused on volcanoes, plate tectonics, volcanology and specifically - Alaska’s dynamic volcanoes. The kit materials and associated activities will coordinate with the Alaska State Science Standards. A guidebook, a summary of additional resources and activities, and materials for used in the kit will be developed.
HOMEWORK
Homework will be assigned periodically. This typically will consist of utilizing local bookstores, libraries, the internet and other resources for materials to assess for use in the volcano kit. Additional homework may include assigned reading to familiarize participants with existing materials for assessment.
ATTENDANCE
It is expected that participants will attend all planned sessions as listed. The compilation of information and completion of the volcano kits by the end of the course require active, consistent participation.
CLASS SIZE
In order to work efficiently and continuously, the class should be limited to no fewer than six and no more than ten participants. Each fully contributing participant will get a kit of their own for their school or classroom use.
NOTES TO PARTICIPANTS
If you have a special need that requires the attention of the instructor, please make that need known immediately at the first class session. As stated in the Participant Handbook and the University Catalog, "cheating on examinations and plagiarism (submitting the work of others as one's own) are examples of prohibited conduct. Participants who engage in such activities will be subject to disciplinary measures, which may include failure in the course or expulsion from the University.”
COURSE OBJECTIVES
  Attitudes: The Participants will
Gain a greater appreciation for the resources available for teachers to conduct classroom investigations concerning Alaska’s volcanoes

Broaden their knowledge concerning the ways and means in which Alaska’s volcanoes are monitored and information regarding their activity is distributed

Familiarize themselves with a wide variety of education and scientific products focused on careers and studies regarding volcanology, earth science, and geology in Alaska

  Processes: The Participants will

Assess existing materials (books, videos, sample kits etc…) and activities for current, factual information and age (grade level) appropriate language and concepts

Evaluate materials and activities available for use in a volcano kit

Develop materials and activities where there are no current, factual, age appropriate materials or activities

Correlate these materials and activities to specific Alaska GLEs
Compile materials, activities and correlation to standards into a volcano kit guide

Develop a guidebook to use the kit

Summarize other resources available for use

Understanding or Skills: The Participants will

Be able to demonstrate the use of a series of grade appropriate, science standard correlated activities and lessons focused on volcanoes to other teachers, students and other educators

Be able to discuss the hazards, monitoring and assessment of Alaska’s volcanoes

Utilize local, national and global web, print and agency resources in order to assist in addressing questions from teachers, students and other educators

GRADES / EXPECTATIONS / ASSIGNMENTS
A
full attendance, full and enthusiastic participation in assessment or discussion of materials, and full contribution or development of new materials (activities, guide, resource list(s)) for kit and construction of kit
B
full attendance, regular participation in assessment or discussion of materials, and contribution or development of new materials (activities, guide, resource list(s)) for kit
