Iliamna Volcano at sunset.
Iliamna Volcano at sunset
There was a small, shallow, earthquake swarm under Iliamna Volcano during May, 1996. After two months of ensuing quiet earthquake activitity resumed on August 1. The earthquake swarm varies in intensity but is continuing at this time (11/22/96). Up to dozens of earthquakes per day are detected, the largest of which are about magnitude 3 (the most common magnitudes vary between 1.5 and substantially less than 1). There have now been over 1,000 located earthquakes. The center of the swarm is about 5 km south of the summit and 1-2 km below sea level. This is a moderate to large earthquake swarm, which probably is the result of the intrusion of magma into the shallow crust beneath the volcano. There has been no eruption.
