UNREST AT SHISHALDIN VOLCANO
February/March, 1999
Shishaldin Image Gallery - April 17, 1999 photos
The following photographs were taken by Dave Schneider (AVO - USGS) on April 17, 1999,
from an Alaska State Trooper airplane. Infrared images (coming soon) also taken on this
flight indicate that low-level strombolian fire-fountaining is occurring beneath the steam.
These photographs were taken less than two days before the onset of the eruption of April 19,
which sent a plume to 30,000' above sea level.
16: Shishaldin from the west at an altitude of 12,000 ft ASL. Rolling steam cloud is obscuring the summit.
Isanotski is visible in the background.
19: Shishaldin from the west. A dark rock fall or avalanche (?) is visibile just to the right of the wing tip.
20: Shishaldin from the west. A dark rock fall or avalanche (?) is visibile just to the right of the wing tip.
25: Directly over the crater. West is at the top of the photo. Not much spatter outside the rim on the south (left) side.
26: View from the south showing same as above.
28: View from the northwest side. Dirty snow/shadow on the north flank.
