Welcome to the Alaska Volcano Observatory Online Library!
Listed below are the explanations of the pre-generated searches shown on the right menu. You may also search for a specific publication.
General Interest
Fact Sheets - Fact sheets are one- to two-page documents that provide a brief synopsis of a particular subject such as a quick reference to the historically active volcanoes of Alaska, or a discussion of the danger of volcanic ash. They are intended for a very general audience.
Annual Summaries - These are detailed descriptions of activity at individual volcanoes that erupted or had significant unrest in a particular year. They are compiled annually by AVO staff.
Bimonthly Reports - These are informal communications from the Alaska Volcano Observatory and should not be further distributed, referenced or otherwise publicly disclosed without written permission from the Scientist-in-Charge of AVO.
Catalog of Volcanoes - The "Catalog of the Historically Active Volcanoes of Alaska", published in 1998, summarizes the location, physiography and structure, eruptive history, and geology of those volcanoes in Alaska that have experienced one or more eruptions during historical time (since about 1760). This is a 104-page document that can be downloaded and printed for off-line use. A more detailed and comprehensive description of all Alaska volcanoes can now be found in the Volcanoes section of this website.
Topical
Hazard Reports - These reports are intended to describe the nature of volcanic hazards at Alaska volcanoes and show the extent of hazardous areas with maps, photographs, and other appropriate illustrations.
Geologic Maps - Recently published geologic maps of Alaska volcanoes.
Interagency Ash Plan - Alaska interagency operating plan for volcanic ash episodes.
Data
Volcano Seismicity Catalogs - These catalogs cover: 1) earthquake origin times, hypocenters, and magnitudes with summary statistics describing the earthquake location quality; 2) a description of instruments deployed in the field and their locations and magnifications; 3) a description of earthquake detection, recording, analysis, and data archival; 4) velocity models used for earthquake locations; 5) phase arrival times recorded at individual stations; and 6) a summary of daily station usage.
GIS - Alaska volcano-related geospatial data and metadata designed for use with Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
SwarmCat - A catalog of over 600 earthquake swarms at volcanoes for the period 1979-1990; includes parametric information on the earthquake swarms, data on eruptions, and basic information such as location and elevation for those volcanoes where earthquake swarms occurred.
Bibliographies - Bibliographic publications pertinent to Alaska volcanoes.
