Activity at Pavlof Volcano
August 29, 2007 - 12:52
Photo of Pavlof Volcano taken by Ron Thomas, of New Mexico Tech, at 7:57 pm on August 23 on a commercial flight from Sand Point to Cold Bay. A plume of minor ash and volcanic gas and water vapor trails downwind (to the southeast) from erupting Pavlof Volcano on the Alaska Peninsula. In this view, the cloud rises no more than a few thousand feet above the 8261-foot tall volcano. This level of activity has probably been typical of the eruption of Pavlof thus far. Over this past weekend, seismicity related to the eruption has increased somewhat, suggesting that ash and lava production may be slowly increasing. Weather clouds have made it difficult to see what is happening. The active lava flow is not visible in this image; the actual vent for the eruption is on the far-side of this snow and ice-covered cone.
