This page lists false eruption reports at Alaskan volcanoes. Spurious eruption accounts are often very tenacious, and require considerable effort to disprove.
We include them on our website for two reasons: a) to prevent duplication of effort in disproving an event, and b) to avoid the appearance of a mistaken omission.
These non-eruption events currently compose about 25% of the historical events in our database. Within the non-eruption classification, these events can be further
classified as follows:
-Steam, smoke, or fumarolic activity: 65%
-Elevated seismicity with no surface eruption: 8%
-Remobilized tephra: 7%
-Mislocated - eruption occurred at a different volcano: 6%
