Sustained decline of the eruptive activity and unrest at Cleveland Volcano over recent weeks to months prompts AVO to downgrade the Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level from YELLOW/ADVISORY to UNASSIGNED.

The last explosion occurred in November 2014, followed by extrusion of a small mound of lava in the summit crater. Seismicity remained low, and weakly elevated surface temperatures were again detected in late February 2015. Clear web camera views throughout most of March showed the presence of a minor steam plume, last seen on March 26. Seismicity has remained low and no activity has been detected in satellite images, or in seismic or infrasound (air pressure) data.

Cleveland is one of the most active volcanoes of the Aleutian Arc. The latest eruptive phase has waxed and waned almost annually since 2001. Renewed explosive activity and unrest could begin again with little to no precursory warning. Two seismic stations were installed at the volcano during the summer of 2014, and AVO will continue to closely monitor the volcano using seismic and infrasound data, as well as daily satellite and web camera image analysis.
