AVO VOLCANO ACTIVITY NOTIFICATION

ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY INFORMATION STATEMENT
U.S. Geological Survey
Tuesday, July 28, 2015, 8:30 PM AKDT (Wednesday, July 29, 2015, 04:30 UTC)

ILIAMNA VOLCANO (VNUM #313020)
60°1'55" N 153°5'30" W, Summit Elevation 10016 ft (3053 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Current Aviation Color Code: GREEN

The M6.3 earthquake that occurred this evening at 6:35 PM AKDT near Iliamna Volcano was tectonic in nature and not related to the volcano. According to the Alaska Earthquake Center (AEC), it was located about 9 miles (15 km) SSW of Iliamna, at a depth of 73 miles (117 km). This depth indicates it occurred in the subducting (downgoing) slab, as opposed to in the crust immediately below the volcano.

For more information, see the AEC website: http://www.aeic.alaska.edu/

Iliamna volcano is located on the western side of lower Cook Inlet in the Lake Clark National Park. Iliamna is a snow-covered stratovolcano which rises 10,020 feet above sea level. Although steam plumes occur on its eastern flanks, there has been no historic volcanic activity at Iliamna. Iliamna is located 225 km (140 miles) southwest of Anchorage and 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Homer.

OTHER ALASKA VOLCANOES

Other Alaska volcanoes show no signs of significant unrest: http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/

AVO scientists conduct daily checks of earthquake activity at all seismically-monitored volcanoes, examine web camera and satellite images for evidence of airborne ash and elevated surface temperatures, and consult other monitoring data as needed.
