ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Monday, May 16, 2016, 12:58 PM AKDT (Monday, May 16, 2016, 20:58 UTC)
CLEVELAND VOLCANO
(VNUM #311240)
52°49'20" N 169°56'42" W,
Summit Elevation 5676 ft (1730 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code:
ORANGE
Volcanic unrest continues at Cleveland Volcano. Energetic steaming and highly elevated surface temperatures in the summit crater were observed in Landsat-8 satellite data on Sunday May 15. This activity was too minor to be observed in the meteorological satellite data that observes the volcano multiple times per day. Landsat-8 views Cleveland has much better spatial resolution (30 m) than meteorological satellite data (1 km), but is only available once every eight days. Seismicity remains low and no explosions have been detected in infrasound (pressure sensor) data.
PAVLOF VOLCANO
(VNUM #312030)
55°25'2" N 161°53'37" W,
Summit Elevation 8261 ft (2518 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code:
ORANGE
Unrest continues at Pavlof Volcano. Seismicity remains low, but above background levels. Clear web camera images and satellite observations over the past day showed no evidence of ash emissions or highly elevated surface temperatures associated with lava effusion. AVO will continue to monitor Pavlof closely as the present levels of seismicity indicate that the volcano remains in a restless state and eruptive activity could resume with little or no warning.
OTHER ALASKA VOLCANOES
Other Alaska volcanoes show no signs of significant unrest:

AVO scientists conduct daily checks of earthquake activity at all seismically-monitored volcanoes, examine web camera and satellite images for evidence of airborne ash and elevated surface temperatures, and consult other monitoring data as needed.
