3600 yr BP mud flow deposit (background) from Redoubt Volcano exposed on the Cook Inlet coast near the mouth of the Crescent River. The peat exposed at the base of the mud flow deposit (and in the foreground) represents the peleo valley floor during emplacement of the mud flow. A pit was dug in the peat to expose and collect ashfall deposits that predate the mud flow. The large boulder on the beach weathered out of the mud flow deposit.
