Kirsten Nicolaysen, Whitman College and Islands of Four Mountains Project leader, leans on a recently emplaced lava block carried down the flank of Cleveland volcano in a block and ash flow. The deposit probably formed when a lava flow high on the flank of the volcano collapsed and tumbled down the side of the volcano, all the way to the sea. Photo taken during the 2014 field season of the Islands of Four Mountains multidisciplinary project, work funded by the National Science Foundation, the USGS/AVO, and the Keck Geology Consortium.
