Text Description:
Plagioclase-phyric flow overlying red scoriaceous material at Site 9. Fine-grained, hypocrystalline, intersertal, seriate to glomeroporphyritic with a matrix of brown glass, plagioclase and opaque. Plagioclase phenocrysts (An39 - An61) are up to 3 mm and some are sieve textured with brown glass inclusions, complex zoning, occasional glass filled embayments, and a few pokilitically include orthopyroxene or opaque. Orthopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 1 mm and occasionally have opaque inclusions. Clinopyroxene phenocrysts are up to 1.1 mm. Opaque phenocrysts are up to 0.45 mm. 59.9% matrix, 28.5% plagioclase, 1.6% clinopyroxene, 3.9% orthopyroxene, 0.4% opaque, 5.7% vesicles.
