View of Tundering head, northwest Kasatochi Island. Tundering cove is to the right and Whiskey cove is to the left of Tundering head. The septum of the hippo's snout is 90 m wide. Prior to the 2008 eruption Tundering talus, immediately below the cliff above Tundering cove, was a nesting site for hundreds of thousand of Crested and Least auklets. The 2008 eruption buried the nesting crevices, making them unavailable. In the few years after the eruption a new talus -- Whiskey talus -- formed below the cliffs above Whiskey cove. The bright green algae testifies to colonization of this new talus. See http://doi.org/10.14509/29718 for additional details.
