View of Shishaldin from AVO geophysical monitoring site SSLS on the southwest flank of the volcano. During a maintenance visit to Unimak Island in late June, good weather allowed the crew a good look at this active volcano. The upper flanks of the volcano are darkened by ash erupted over the last several months during low-level lava fountaining and small explosions deep in the summit crater. On some days, a plume of steam and gas can be seen in the AVO web camera images.
